How to Cancel Forgotten Subscriptions and Get a Refund
Find every recurring charge you forgot about, cancel them, and recover what you can.
Research consistently shows that consumers underestimate their subscription spending by 2-3x. You think you're paying $50/month in subscriptions. The actual number is usually closer to $150-200. Free trials that converted, services you meant to cancel, family plans you forgot you joined — they add up quietly.
How to Find Subscriptions You've Forgotten About
Check your bank and credit card statements: Go back 3 months and look for any recurring charge — weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual. Sort by amount to make patterns visible.
Check your email: Search for "receipt," "subscription," "renewal," "billing," and "invoice." Look for annual renewal notices buried in your inbox.
Check your app store: Both Apple (Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions) and Google (Play Store → Subscriptions) show all active subscriptions tied to your account.
Use a subscription tracking service: Apps like Rocket Money, Trim, and PocketGuard connect to your bank account and automatically identify recurring charges. Rocket Money can also cancel subscriptions on your behalf.
How to Get a Refund for Unused Months
There is no universal rule requiring companies to refund unused subscription time. However, many will — especially if you have not used the service recently and you ask promptly.
Your best case for a refund:
You forgot to cancel a free trial; you have not logged in for months; you are cancelling immediately after a renewal charge; you are a long-term subscriber (companies value retention).
How to ask: Contact customer support directly and say: "I was charged for [service] on [date] for a subscription I forgot to cancel. I haven't used the service in [X] months. I'd like to cancel and request a refund for the unused period."
Many services — especially larger ones like Adobe, LinkedIn Premium, and streaming platforms — will offer at minimum a prorated refund. Some will refund the entire recent charge.
Services Known to Offer Refunds
Amazon Prime: Refunds the unused portion of an annual membership if you have not used Prime benefits since your last renewal.
Adobe Creative Cloud: Prorated refunds available within the cancellation policy window. Annual plans have an early termination fee — check your plan terms.
Audible: Will often refund recent charges if you contact them directly and have not used credits.
Gym memberships: Harder to recover, but worth disputing if the gym was closed, you moved, or there was a billing error. Some states have specific laws requiring gyms to refund unused time.
Prevent It Going Forward
Before signing up for any free trial: Set a calendar reminder for one day before the trial ends.
Use a virtual card number: Services like Privacy.com generate single-use or merchant-locked card numbers. You can cancel the virtual card to stop a subscription without disputing the charge.
